Blue Lines (1991) is the debut album from Bristol collective Massive Attack. Featuring vocalists Shara Nelson, Horace Andy, Neneh Cherry and a young Tricky, it drew on American soul, hip-hop and dub, filtered through British club culture. The press called it 'trip-hop', a name Massive Attack never embraced. Whatever you call it, Blue Lines is one of the most influential British albums of the 1990s. Unfinished Sympathy, recorded with a 40-piece live orchestra, remains its centrepiece and one of the most sampled songs in British music history.
