This is the 2012 4AD reissue of Stars and Topsoil: A Collection 1982–1990, pressed on 2LP white vinyl. Eighteen tracks remastered, compiled from every Cocteau Twins album recorded during their time on 4AD. Catalogue CAD2K19.
The Cocteau Twins made nine albums between 1982 and 1996. Stars and Topsoil covers their first eight years on 4AD, from Garlands through Heaven Or Las Vegas. Elizabeth Fraser's voice and the layered guitar work of Robin Guthrie produced a sound that influenced every dream pop and shoegaze record that came after. If you buy Beach House, Mazzy Star or anything in that lineage, this is the original reference point. Eighteen tracks is the best introduction available in a single package.
Individual Cocteau Twins albums from this period (Treasure, Heaven Or Las Vegas, Victorialand) are available separately on vinyl. Stars and Topsoil is the compilation for buyers who want the range without committing to individual studio albums first. The white vinyl 2LP is the currently available edition of this collection.
