Dummy (1994) is the debut album from Bristol trio Portishead, comprising Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley. Released on Go! Discs, it won the Mercury Prize in 1995 and spent more than two years on the UK charts. Beth Gibbons' raw, jazz-inflected voice is the album's emotional core, set against Barrow's cinematic, sample-heavy production. Sour Times, Wandering Star and Glory Box entered the language. Thirty years on, Dummy remains one of the most accomplished debut albums in British music, and one of the rare records that sounds like it could not have been made anywhere else.
