East was Cold Chisel's commercial breakthrough, the album that turned Cheap Wine and Choirgirl into Australian standards. It was recorded in Sydney and released in August 1980, entering the charts at number one. The album remains the most-sold Cold Chisel record and the one most people reach for when they want to explain what the band meant to Australian audiences in the early 1980s.
