Monster was R.E.M.'s ninth studio album, released in September 1994. After the global success of Out of Time and Automatic for the People, neither of which was toured, it was a deliberate course correction: loud, distorted guitars, feedback, and producer Scott Litt back at the desk. Recorded in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Miami, the album reached number one in the US and the UK. It was the last R.E.M. album to feature all four original members before drummer Bill Berry suffered a brain aneurysm during the subsequent world tour and retired from the band in 1997.
