Red Sails In The Sunset is the album where Midnight Oil went to Tokyo and came back with their first number one. Released in October 1984, their fifth studio album, it's a dense, restless, politically alert record that marked the peak of the band's 80s art-rock era. The cover art by Japanese artist Tsunehisa Kimura depicts Sydney Harbour after a hypothetical nuclear strike, and the music inside is just as urgent.

When The Generals Talk, Best Of Both Worlds, Kosciusko, Jimmy Sharman's Boxers. The album's two singles drove it up the charts while the deeper cuts showed the band stretching into new territory. Rob Hirst even takes lead vocals on two tracks, the only Midnight Oil songs he ever sang lead on. Some of the material was later performed at the January 1985 Goat Island concert for Triple J's 10th birthday.

Pressed on 180 gram heavyweight black vinyl, remastered for this reissue. Recorded and mixed at Victor Aoyama Studio in Tokyo between June and August 1984, produced by Nick Launay with the band.
