The Birthing Tree is the second novel from Amanda Peters, the Mi'kmaq writer from Nova Scotia whose debut, The Berry Pickers, won the Andrew Carnegie Medal. It is a quiet, powerful book about inheritance and what we choose to carry forward.

Aliet is born beneath a tree that has been sacred to generations of Indigenous women, at the roots of which her mother died giving birth to her. Raised by her fierce, loving grandmother Kiju, Aliet grows up between two worlds: her grandmother's traditional knowledge, and the hospital where white doctors dismiss it. Later she becomes a nurse in the city, holding both. When Kiju dies, Aliet goes back to the tree to work out which parts of her heritage are hers to protect.
