Top 5 Myths About Vinyl Records (Busted or Confirmed!)

Vinyl records are having a huge resurgence, but with that comes a lot of theories and sometimes misinformation. Whether you’re a seasoned crate digger or just starting your collection, here are 5 common vinyl myths, busted (or confirmed) with facts.

1. Black vinyl sounds better than coloured vinyl

False. While black vinyl has long been considered the audiophile standard, coloured vinyl can sound just as good if manufactured properly. The sound quality comes down to the mastering and pressing and definitely not the colour.  And if coloured vinyl is your preference go for it.... there are many collectors that prefer colour.

2. New vinyl records have no value

False. Many new releases, especially limited editions or coloured pressings, gain value quickly. For instance, a recent Olivia Rodrigo - Guts limited vinyl pressing has seen resale prices surge within months of release. Collectors look for rarity, condition, and pressing quality, and new vinyl ticks all those boxes too.

3. Artists make more money from vinyl than Spotify

True (generally). According to an article in The Guardian, some artists earn more from selling one vinyl record than from thousands of streams. While it depends on label deals and costs, vinyl is often a more supportive, artist-friendly format.

4. 180-gram vinyl sounds better

False. Heavier vinyl feels premium and can be more durable, but it doesn't guarantee better sound. The mastering and source audio have a far bigger impact on what you hear.

5. You need expensive gear to enjoy vinyl

False. A good turntable setup doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We recommend affordable, high-quality models like the Audio-Technica LP60 or LP70, both available in-store. Great sound is about setup, not just price.
