Massive Attack are a Bristol trip-hop collective who formed from the Wild Bunch sound system in the late 1980s. Mezzanine was their third album and their darkest: where Blue Lines had drawn on soul, hip-hop and dub, Mezzanine turned toward post-punk, gothic rock and industrial music. Recorded with a live band, a deliberate departure from their earlier approach, it is denser, colder and more confrontational than anything they had made before. Teardrop, featuring Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, became their best-known single. Mezzanine is widely regarded as one of the greatest British albums of the 1990s.
